Suffering through the dog days and thoughts on upcoming adventures

One of the toughest things about motorcycling in West Texas is August. The constant 100-plus-degree temperatures and strong south wind usually dictate a short break –– at least for me –– from riding bikes with any consistency until cooler weather returns in September. My August riding typically gets relegated to nighttime only, when temps are a bit cooler and the beating sun is at rest, and such rides through the darkness make filming new episodes of Tim Kreitz Adventures mostly impractical. GoPros hate the darkness. So do DSLRs for the most part. I did a few nighttime episodes last summer, but was displeased with the video quality and ultimately decided to only do daytime filming. That said (and in the interest of not going a month without any new episodes), I've decided to suffer through at least one more ultra-hot August ride. My longtime friend and bandmate Matt, whom you've seen in a previous episode of Tim Kreitz Adventures, has invited me to make a motorcycle trip with

Tim Kreitz Adventures #44: Rattlesnake Bomber Base • Pyote, Texas

Valentine's Day 2015 finds Britt and I heading into the West Texas Badlands to visit the ruins of a World War II bomber base near Pyote, Texas. Along the way, we grab some lunch, visit a century old graveyard, and discuss Britt's dad's involvement in the D-Day invasion at Normandy on June 6, 1944. ADDITIONAL NOTES ON THIS ADVENTURE Those of you who are longtime patrons of The Superbike Blog will remember that we made almost this exact same ride to Pyote six years ago with our friend David, who we lost to cancer in 2010. Though this return trip was definitely a fun ride and I thoroughly enjoyed every moment of the day, I couldn't help but dwell on the lingering memories of Dave with every destination. The sense of Dave's absence wasn't lost on Britt, either. When we arrived at the entrance to the base, we immediately exchanged glances, fully aware of what the other was thinking about. There's a short sequence of us remembering Dave before heading across the

Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Moments

With a little help from the late, great Robert M. Pirsig, we ride our motorcycles to a place we've never been before and enjoy a Sunday ride that is completely in the moment. No plans, no schedule, no hurry, just Clif on his Yamaha FJR1300, Britt on his Harley-Davidson Dyna, and me on my FZ-07 as we explore flora and fauna in the red dirt country of West Texas on a beautiful autumn day. Additional notes on this episode: 1.) Texas's only natural lake is Caddo Lake, which it shares with Louisiana. 2.) Texas has 187 manmade lakes/reservoirs. 3.) The Hedge Apples in this video are Maclura Pomifera. 4.) Mrs. Kathy's is located at 3413 College Avenue in Snyder, Texas. 5.) Total mileage for this trip was 171. 6.) Shoot date was Sunday October 13, 2019.
