West Texas Motorcycle Romp - Motovlog 61


We bid a fond farewell to Summer 2015 with a day-ride around West Texas on Labor Day Weekend. Along the way, we visit a place called South Sandhills where we meet a friendly horseman and take in the sights. We then head to the small town of crane where we explore the ruins of an old movie theater, check out a tiny waterfall, and search hopelessly for a place to eat lunch. Oh, and Britt loses control of his bodily functions.

1980 Suzuki GS1000G: New Project Bike [Overview]

I used to restore bikes a lot and then moved away from it for a variety of reasons over the past few years. But this Suzuki GS1000 is a bit of a "family" bike and it was given to me for free, so I'm really looking forward to turning it into something wild. It will be an ode to the old-school superbikes of the '70s and '80s when I'm done with it.

On metaphysical quality, motorcycles, the late Robert Pirsig, and me

The passing last month of iconic writer and philosopher Robert Pirsig, author of 1974's Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance , is currently resonating throughout both the motorcycling and academic worlds. As you may know if you've followed this blog with any frequency over the past 13 years, I have often fancied myself a bit of a thinker and lay philosopher, one who has repeatedly used motorcycling as metaphor, both in my writings and videos. With that in mind, I feel compelled to compose a bit about how the book has affected me in different ways over the years, and to explore motorcycling as metaphysical quality in a way that Pirsig would've hopefully not completely hated. I first became aware of Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance in college during the '90s. In this episode, we ride Santiago Canyon, lane-split, have lunch at Los Tacos Ricos, and spend the afternoon cruising the harbor onboard the S.S. Suburban Delinquent.
